What is a flat roof?

Most flat roofs aren’t actually flat. A well installed flat roof will tend to have a slight fall on them to allow the rainwater to flow into the downpipes.
This contrasts with a pitched roof, which will be covered with slates or tiles.
Flat roofs were introduced to the UK after the second world war, when the construction industry was having to deal with shortages, pressures on pricing and rebuilding programs that needed to be built quickly.

What are the types of construction of flat roofs?

A flat roof construction is either:
Concrete slabs, which is usually covered in a screed and then a waterproof membrane.
Timber flat roofs, with joists and a covering of plywood or a similar material like OSB boards, finished with a waterproof membrane.

Torches on Felt.

This is a sealed bitumen felt that is applied in three layers, The felt is melt welded using a blow torch. This requires technical expertise as you will want to use a contractor that has insurance to cover for Hot works. Always ask for a copy of a roofing contractors Public Liability Insurance.

If an expert installer has been used, a felt roof could last up to 30 years. This is not a job for a DIY installer.

GRP

This is a fiberglass and has in the past had a bad reputation. The technology was originally used in boat building and didn’t have the ability to expand and contract in the changing weather conditions. The manufacturers have invested in the product and GRP an excellent roofing material. It is known for its durability, lasting in many cases well over 30 years.

It requires an experienced installer to apply as this will make all the difference in its longevity.

EPDM Rubber

This is a durable synthetic rubber that has become more popular in recent years. It only comes in grey/black so can look unpleasant on a large roof, but if it has been well installed by a competent roofing team can last up to 30 years.
As members of the NFRC you can rely on our team of competent roofers, we can install all of the roofing membranes in this blog post
